Protégés of Sen. Elizabeth Warren and other liberal lawmakers are being pushed as contenders for key economic posts in a Joe Biden administration, setting up a potential clash with party centrists and business leaders backing the Democrat.
Among those being promoted by progressives are Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.), a former Harvard Law student of Warren’s, and Congressional Oversight Council member Bharat Ramamurti, a onetime policy aide to the Massachusetts Democrat, according to activists, party insiders and analysts. Like their mentor, Porter and Ramamurti have become public figures in their own right, with a growing catalog of viral tweets and videos showcasing the kind of populism that made Warren a progressive icon.
The list also includes alumni of Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), who has been one of the finance industry’s most outspoken critics and would chair the Banking Committee if Democrats control Congress. Brown’s former banking policy staff in the mix include Graham Steele, now a leading voice on safeguarding the financial system against climate risks, and Amanda Fischer, who also worked for years as a top aide to Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), chair of the House Financial Services Committee.
